The name Iolite is derived from the Greek word “io” which translates to violet flower.  Some other common names of this gemstone are cordierite, dichroite, water sapphire, and lynx sapphire.  Iolite occurs in altered aluminous rocks and in some igneous rocks. It is known as the Vikings' Compass and provides the vision to move us, physically and spiritually, from one realm to the next.  Leif Eriksson and other Viking explorers who ventured far out into the Atlantic Ocean used thin pieces of Iolite as the world's first polarizing filter.  Iolite can help you to express your true self, free yourself from other people’s expectations.  Iolite resonates with the crown chakra and is one of the third eye chakra stones.  It helps release discord within relationships, encourages taking responsibility for yourself, and independence.
